A devastating fire on New Year's Eve has claimed at least 40 lives at a Swiss bar, sparking intense scrutiny over the venue's safety arrangements. According to prosecutors, the blaze likely began when staff held sparkling candles too close to the ceiling, igniting a rapid and widespread fire. The Le Constellation bar in the upscale ski resort of Crans-Montana was filled with partygoers when the fire broke out. Witnesses reported seeing staff carrying candles on bottles of champagne, and questions have been raised about the foam material used to soundproof the ceiling of the basement where revellers danced. Investigations are underway to determine whether anyone will face criminal liability for the tragedy. Police were quick to arrive at the scene, but the intense heat from the fire made it difficult to identify the victims, with officials only confirming the death of a 19-year-old Italian international golfer, Emanuele Galeppini. Local residents, including some who narrowly escaped the tragedy, have expressed their shock and grief. One resident, Ashley Hauri, 23, had planned to attend the party but decided against it at the last minute. Six of her former co-workers were inside the bar when the fire erupted, with two being hospitalized and four still missing. The Swiss government has confirmed that many of the victims were likely young people, with some possibly under the age of 16. The bar's owners have defended their safety record, stating that they had undergone inspections in the past, but the investigation will determine whether the venue had complied with all safety regulations.
