Tennessee Uni Reverses Decision, Pays $500,000 to Professor Fired for Charlie Kirk Post, Issues Apology
APSU will compensate professor Darren Michael with $500,000 following his wrongful termination linked to a post about Charlie Kirk.
Austin Peay State University (APSU) has agreed to pay $500,000 in compensation to associate professor Darren Michael, who was initially fired over a social media post related to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The settlement also includes reimbursement for 'therapeutic counseling services.' As part of the agreement, APSU will issue a public apology for not following proper procedures in terminating Michael's tenure.
Michael, a professor of acting and directing, was suspended and later reinstated in the classroom after making remarks about Kirk's death on social media. The post, which criticized Kirk's views on gun deaths, was shared by US Senator Marsha Blackburn on her social media account. APSU initially dismissed Michael, citing 'insensitive and disrespectful' comments that were perceived as justifying Kirk's death.
However, the university has now reversed its decision, acknowledging that Michael's firing was inconsistent with APSU's values of mutual respect and human dignity. The university's president, Mike Licari, stated that the decision to terminate Michael's tenure was a mistake.
Michael's case is significant as it highlights the growing trend of conservative activists and politicians targeting individuals who make negative online comments about high-profile figures. The incident has sparked concerns about free speech and academic freedom in institutions of higher learning.
