A 20-year-old University of Toronto student from India, Shivank Avasthi, was tragically shot and killed on a campus trail on December 23. Avasthi, a bright and ambitious third-year student, was pronounced dead at the scene. Following a thorough investigation, Toronto police have arrested and charged 28-year-old Babatunde Afuwape with first-degree murder. Afuwape was on parole for firearm offenses and was arrested on December 28 for a parole violation. Toronto Police Detective Sergeant Stacey McCabe described the killing as a 'senseless act' and stressed that the police were working to reassure the university community. The police believe that Afuwape acted alone, but are still investigating a possible motive. They are urging anyone who saw Afuwape or interacted with him on the day of the murder to come forward. The Indian consulate in Toronto expressed 'deep anguish' over Avasthi's death and is providing support to the family. The university is also working to address the concerns of the community and provide counseling services to students affected by the incident.
