The United States has intensified its military campaign against the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria, carrying out a series of large-scale strikes in the country. The operation, dubbed 'Operation Hawkeye Strike', is a direct response to the devastating ISIS ambush on December 13, 2025, which killed three American servicemen and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra, Syria.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes targeted ISIS positions throughout Syria, with the aim of punishing the terrorist group for its brazen attack. The operation is the latest in a series of joint efforts by the US, UK, and France to combat ISIS in the region.
The December 13 ambush resulted in the tragic deaths of two American soldiers, Sgt. Edgar Brian Torres-Tovar and Sgt. William Nathaniel Howard, both from Iowa, and a civilian interpreter, Ayad Mansoor Sakat. The US has vowed to hold ISIS accountable for its actions, with Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth stating that the strikes were 'a declaration of vengeance' rather than a declaration of war.
The UK and France had previously carried out joint strikes in Syria, targeting an underground facility used by ISIS to store weapons. The US had also launched strikes on December 20, 2025, in response to the Palmyra ambush.
Syria has condemned the US strikes, highlighting the need for international cooperation to combat terrorism. The US, however, remains resolute in its commitment to defend its people and avenge the deaths of its servicemen. As CENTCOM stated, 'if you harm our warfighters, we will find you and kill you anywhere in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice'.
