In a bid to prevent further bloodshed and alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has emphasized the need for an immediate ceasefire. Speaking at a press conference, Rubio stated that countries providing arms to the warring factions, particularly the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, must use their influence to broker a truce. The US is engaging with all parties involved, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, to facilitate a humanitarian ceasefire that would allow aid organizations to deliver critical assistance. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths, widespread famine, ethnic killings, and mass displacement. More than 12 million people have been forced to flee their homes, with many facing unimaginable hardships, including rape, robbery, and bereavement. Previous international efforts, led by the US, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the UAE, have failed to bring an end to the conflict. The US has urged outside actors to use their leverage to bring about a humanitarian truce, and Rubio has assured that the US is 'very focused' on achieving this goal. With Sudan topping the list of global humanitarian crises, the international community must act swiftly to prevent further devastation and ensure the delivery of aid to those in need.
