Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky made a crucial stop in Canada on Saturday, en route to a high-stakes meeting with US President Joe Biden in Florida. The visit comes as Russia continues its brutal assault on Ukraine, with a devastating drone and missile attack on Kyiv leaving two dead, dozens wounded, and over a million residents without power and heating. The attack, which lasted 10 hours, saw 500 drones and 40 missiles pound the capital and its surrounding region, targeting infrastructure, energy facilities, and military sites. Ukraine's military reported that Russian forces used hypersonic missiles and drones in the assault. Neighbouring Poland, a NATO member, scrambled jets and activated its air defences in response. Zelensky, who met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, condemned the Russian onslaught, saying it showed Moscow's intention to continue the invasion, which has claimed tens of thousands of lives since February 2022. The Ukrainian leader accused Russia of using every opportunity to cause suffering and undermine the country's efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace. The upcoming meeting with Biden in Florida is set to focus on a new 20-point plan to freeze the conflict on its current front line. The plan, which could require Ukraine to pull back troops from the east, has been met with skepticism by some, with Trump saying that Zelensky's plan needs his approval before it can be considered. Zelensky, however, remains optimistic, saying that the aim of the talks is to reduce unresolved issues to a minimum and secure strong security guarantees for Ukraine. The country is in dire need of European and US support to acquire weapons and funds, both of which are insufficient, according to Zelensky. The Ukrainian leader also emphasized the importance of a roadmap for the country's reconstruction, which is expected to require between $700 billion and $800 billion. As the conflict rages on, Zelensky's visit to Canada serves as a reminder of the urgent need for international support and cooperation to bring an end to the suffering of the Ukrainian people.
