The Indian government has established two committees to shape the country's artificial intelligence (AI) policy, while keeping the door open for a future AI law.

A high-level ministerial body and a standing expert advisory body will advise the government on AI governance policy development and coordination.

However, the government has not ruled out the possibility of a separate legal framework for AI in the future, as it currently views the technology as being in an early, innovation-driven phase.

India does not yet have a dedicated AI law, unlike some jurisdictions such as the EU AI Act, but some aspects of AI are addressed in a limited way under the existing IT rules.
