Oscar-winning Spanish director Pedro Almodovar urged artists to speak out about the crises facing society, describing it as their moral duty against 'monsters' like U.S. President Donald Trump.
At the Cannes Film Festival, Almodovar said artists must speak out against those who threaten democracy, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
'The creator, from their small platform, each from their own, must speak without mincing words,' Almodovar said.
He added that silence and fear are a 'bad sign' and a sign of the erosion of democracy.
Almodovar's latest film, Bitter Christmas, premiered at the festival, and he is competing for the Palme d'Or top prize for the sixth time.
