In the 98-year history of the Academy Awards, only six ties have occurred, making this year's Best Live-Action Short Film tie a rare moment. Presenter Kumail Nanjiani announced the tie, saying 'It's a tie! I'm not joking! It's actually a tie, so everyone calm down.' The winners, The Singers and Two People Exchanging Saliva, were both surprised by the news, with both recipients mentioning they didn't know Oscars had ties.

The rarity of tied awards at the Oscars dates back to 1932, when Wallace Beery and Fredric March tied for Best Actor. Other notable ties include A Chance to Live and So Much for So Little in 1950, Artie Shaw: Time is All You've Got and Down and Out in America in 1987, and Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty in 2013.

The most high-profile occurrence of a tied award was in 1969 when Katharine Hepburn and Barbra Streisand tied for Best Actress.
