A new survey from the Angus Reid Institute found that 53% of Canadians support Prime Minister Mark Carney's ongoing visit to India, with a further 7% believing the trip is too long in coming.
According to the poll, 57% of respondents think Ottawa should prioritize trade and investment in its relationship with India, while 31% focus on energy cooperation.
However, while Carney hopes to clinch a comprehensive economic partnership agreement by the end of the year, 58% of those surveyed feel Canada should 'cautiously re-engage' on a free trade agreement.
Views on India have not warmed up despite official relations improving, with just 30% of Canadians having a favourable view of the country.
ARI's vice-president, Vina Nadjibulla, commented that the diplomatic reset with India has not yet translated into a public opinion reset, and Ottawa needs to clearly articulate why India matters to Canada's economic security and diversification.
