Just days before Cesar Chavez Day celebrations, Dolores Huerta's legacy has been hit by a major controversy. Huerta, a labor icon and co-founder of the United Farm Workers, has accused Cesar Chavez of sexual abuse in the 1960s and 1970s.
Huerta's family life has come under focus, including her two husbands, Ralph Head and Ventura Huerta, and her long-term relationship with Cesar Chavez's brother, Richard.
Huerta married Ralph Head in 1947 or 1948 while studying at Delta College in Stockton, California. Their marriage lasted about three years before they separated in 1953. They had two daughters, Celeste and Lori.
She later married Ventura Huerta, a fellow Community Service Organization member, in the 1950s. Their marriage ended in 1964, but Huerta retained his last name. They had five children: Fidel, Emilio, Vincent, Alicia, and Angela.
Huerta met Richard Chavez through their shared activism in the late 1950s. Her romantic relationship with Richard began in her early 40s, around the early 1970s. They remained lifelong partners until Richard's death in 2011 and had four children: Juana, Maria Elena, Ricard, and Camila.
