Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal expressed confidence in the implementation of a 'very vibrant first phase' of the bilateral trade pact with the US by mid-July.

The remarks come amid President Trump's decision to impose additional 12.5% tariffs on imports from 60 countries, including India, over forced-labour allegations.

Goyal stated that the two nations are 'fast-moving towards closing all the open ends' and that the first tranche of the trade agreement will give preferential access to India over its competitors.

Further meetings are expected to take place in the following weeks to fine-tune the initial trade offerings.

The US delegation, led by chief negotiator Brendan Lynch, held talks with their Indian counterparts from June 2-4, and an initial framework for the first phase of the bilateral trade agreement was revealed on February 3.
