Millions of migrant workers in the Gulf nations are facing uncertainty due to the escalating conflict in the region. The workers, mostly from Southeast and South Asian nations, make up a workforce of over 24 million, accounting for 40% of the labor force in West Asia.
According to reports, three people from Pakistan, Nepal, and Bangladesh have been killed in the United Arab Emirates, while a Filipino caregiver was killed in Tel Aviv and another Filipino migrant worker was injured in Kuwait.
As the situation worsens, countries are preparing to repatriate the workforce. The Philippines is considering a mandatory repatriation of its 2.4 million workers in the Middle East, but this decision is being taken carefully due to the potential devastating impact on both the Philippines and the host country.
Many migrant workers are in low-income work and lack adequate protection, putting their safety at risk. In previous conflicts, some workers have been abandoned by their employers without wages and travel documents.
