US President Donald Trump has hinted at the possibility of sending ground troops into Iran if necessary, contradicting earlier statements by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Trump told the New York Post that he would not rule out a ground operation, saying 'probably don't need them', 'if they were necessary'. He also mentioned a 'big wave' that has yet to hit Iran, warning that Washington does not know who the country's new leader will be following the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Hegseth had earlier dismissed concerns of a prolonged conflict, saying 'This is not Iraq. This is not endless.' However, Trump's comments have raised doubts about the US military operation's goals and the potential for a regime change in the near term.

The conflict has intensified into a wider war in the region, with Iran and its allied armed groups launching missiles at Israel, Arab states, and US military targets. Four American troops have been killed in action, while over 500 deaths have been reported in Iran, according to the Red Crescent.
