The US and Iran have exchanged fire in the latest escalation of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, with the US military shooting down four Iranian attack drones and striking surveillance and radar sites along Iran's coast.

The US military said it also intercepted seven Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at Kuwait and Bahrain, with both countries issuing alerts that they were under attack.

The skirmishing marks the latest outbreak of violence under a ceasefire struck two months ago by the US and Iran, and comes after Iran launched 30 missiles and drones at Kuwait in the middle of the week, damaging its airport and killing one person.

President Trump has shown a reluctance to restart the war unless the lower-level attacks kill American troops, and is instead pursuing a memorandum of understanding with Iran that would extend the ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

However, mediators in the talks said they remain stalled over issues including Iran's access to billions of dollars in frozen cash and less stringent commitments on its nuclear program.
