The USS Tripoli, a 50,000-ton amphibious assault ship, is set to enter the war theatre in the north Arabian Sea, carrying over 2,000 marines of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).
The ship, accompanied by landing ship decks (LSDs) for deploying Marines on enemy land, is expected to enter the war theatre around March 22-23.
The US Navy's move comes as tensions between the US, Iran, and Israel remain high, with the Strait of Hormuz being a key point of contention.
The Strait of Hormuz is a mere 33 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, making it a strategic chokepoint for international oil shipping.
While the US has not announced its plans, there is a strong possibility that the USS Tripoli may be used to open up the Strait of Hormuz to international oil shipping and ensure freedom of navigation.
This could be one of the plans as the US has targeted Iranian navy and missile/drone/ artillery batteries on the coast of the Persian Gulf.
