The Allahabad high court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) against Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha and Congress MP from Rae Bareli, over allegations of dual citizenship.

The court passed the order after taking up a petition by Karnataka-based BJP worker S Vignesh Shishir, who sought registration of the FIR against Gandhi due to alleged British citizenship.

Senior advocate SB Pandey, representing the Union government, said the high court has directed to lodge an FIR against Gandhi in the citizenship case.

Central agencies may also probe the case, as it concerns the citizenship of a foreign country, Pandey added.
