Assam's Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts have seen a significant improvement in the law and order situation, with mobile internet services being restored on Sunday. The decision was made by Ajay Tewari, Additional Chief Secretary of the Home and Political Department, citing an improvement in the situation and no further apprehension of a breach of public peace. According to officials, the violence that erupted in the districts last week, leaving two people dead and over 170 injured, mostly security personnel, is slowly subsiding. Normalcy is being restored in the affected areas, with shops and business establishments reopening and people coming out to procure essential items. As part of the security measures, the Army, Rapid Action Force, and CRPF remain deployed in the worst-hit areas, assisting the police to maintain law and order. Prohibitory orders under Section 163 of BNSS continue to be in place. The violence was sparked by a long-standing dispute between the indigenous Karbi and migrant Bihari communities over land encroachment in the tribal belts. A tripartite meeting was held on Friday between the state government, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, and the protesters, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma assuring the agitators that the government would move the Gauhati High Court for an early order on its previous stay on eviction in grazing lands in both districts. Mobile internet services, which were suspended on December 23, have been restored with immediate effect, and all mobile service providers operating in the two districts have been directed to restore their services. The situation is being closely monitored, and additional security forces remain deployed in the area to ensure that no further incidents occur.
