Bengal's Janata Unnayan Party (JUP) chief Humayun Kabir's son Golam Nabi Azad, popularly known as Sohel, was detained by police in West Bengal's Murshidabad district on Sunday for allegedly attacking a policeman posted at their residence. According to sources, the incident occurred when Constable Jumma Khan, who serves as a personal security officer for MLA Kabir, applied for a few days' leave and was allegedly assaulted by Sohel. The police have taken action against Sohel, citing a cognisable offence for raising his hand on the policeman. Trinamool Congress has distanced itself from the incident, stating that the ruling party has no involvement and that the police have taken necessary legal action. Kabir, who was away from his residence at the time of the incident, claimed that police cordoned off his house in Shaktipur area following the alleged assault. He alleged that his son was being targeted by the police at the behest of the Trinamool Congress and that the action was politically motivated. Kabir announced plans to protest against the alleged harassment by gheraoing the SP's office in Murshidabad on January 1. He demanded an explanation from senior police and administration officials regarding the incident and the detention of his son. The incident has sparked a controversy, with Kabir accusing the police of targeting him due to his recent suspension from the Trinamool Congress and his subsequent decision to form the JUP. He had also laid the foundation stone for a mosque modelled on Babri Masjid in Murshidabad on December 6, a move that has been seen as a provocative gesture by many. Kabir's JUP has announced plans to contest in the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal, and he has expressed his desire to form an electoral alliance with Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM. The incident is likely to add to the already charged political atmosphere in the state ahead of the elections.
