The Income Tax Department conducted searches at the premises of two Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders, Debasish Kumar and Kumar Saha, in West Bengal ahead of the April 23-29 assembly polls.

The searches triggered protests from TMC workers, who accused the federal agencies of being misused by the ruling party.

TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar questioned the timing of the raids, saying that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have brought central agencies and forces to the state but lack the people's support.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had questioned Kumar in a separate land-grabbing case last week and searched several locations related to a real estate group in Kolkata and Salt Lake.

Opposition BJP leader Rahul Sinha accused Kumar of receiving kickbacks for an illegal land deal, calling the TMC a corrupt party.
