The Bombay Bar Association (BBA) has condemned threats and violence against the family of retired judge Justice Gautam Patel, who faced a violent attack in the UK over a landmark judgment he passed in 2024.
The BBA passed an eight-point resolution expressing solidarity with Justice Patel and calling upon the Ministry of External Affairs to take necessary steps to ensure the safety of his family.
The association strongly condemned the attack on the judge and his family, saying it strikes at the heart of judicial independence and constitutes a blatant assault on the rule of law.
Reports of physical injury to a member of Justice Patel's family have rendered the matter particularly disturbing, warranting serious attention from authorities.
Justice Patel's daughter Aditi Patel was attacked by a masked man in London on April 22, while his wife Malashri Patel received a threat letter in September last year.
The BBA urged concerned authorities to conduct a prompt, thorough, and effective investigation into the incidents and ensure that those responsible are identified, apprehended, and prosecuted in accordance with law.
