The Chhattisgarh cabinet has formed a high-level committee to draft a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) aimed at simplifying laws and promoting religious and gender equality.

The committee, headed by retired judge Ranjana Prakash Desai, will seek suggestions from citizens, organisations and experts, and may also invite feedback through a web portal.

The proposed UCC aims to simplify laws and promote equality, addressing issues such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, maintenance and family disputes currently governed by different personal laws based on religion.

The committee's recommendations will be placed before the cabinet for approval, after which it will be introduced in the state assembly to establish a uniform and transparent civil legal framework.
