A heated debate in the Delhi Assembly turned into a full-blown political confrontation as leaders from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) clashed over remarks made on two of India's most revered national heroes, Guru Tegh Bahadur and Bhagat Singh. The controversy began during a debate on the Delhi government's programme commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. BJP leaders accused AAP's Leader of the Opposition, Atishi, of making 'insensitive' remarks against the Sikh guru. In response, AAP leaders criticized Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta for misstating details about Bhagat Singh's role in the 1929 bombing of the Central Legislative Assembly. During the debate, BJP MLAs demanded a public apology from AAP, claiming that Atishi's remarks had hurt religious sentiments. However, AAP MLA Sanjeev Jha alleged that he was stopped from entering the Assembly premises despite being an elected representative, and accused the BJP of disrespecting Bhagat Singh. The situation escalated further when Chief Minister Rekha Gupta appeared to make an error in her speech, referring to the 'Congress government' instead of the British government of India when discussing Bhagat Singh's actions. AAP Delhi chief Saurabh Bhardwaj shared a video clip of the speech on social media, accusing the Chief Minister of misrepresenting history and embarrassing the country. The political tension in the Assembly has increased, with AAP leaders demanding an urgent discussion on the worsening air pollution situation in the national capital. The BJP, on the other hand, has been staging protests inside the House, demanding an apology from AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal. The controversy has highlighted the deep-seated divisions between the two parties and has put the focus on the importance of respecting India's rich history and national heroes.
