Delhi and its surrounding areas, including Noida and Gurugram, experienced a rare winter rain on Friday, further intensifying the city's cold wave conditions. According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Delhi's minimum temperature plummeted to a record-low 4.6 degrees Celsius, making it the coldest day of the season so far. The rain, which caught residents off guard, was accompanied by a thick layer of fog that enveloped the region. This comes just a day after Delhi recorded its third-lowest temperature of the winter season at 5.8 degrees Celsius. On Friday, the maximum temperatures remained lower than normal across all monitoring stations, while the minimum temperature was recorded about 2.3 degrees Celsius below the seasonal normal. The IMD defines a cold day as a day when the minimum temperature falls below 10 degrees Celsius, or when the maximum temperature drops 4.5 to 6.4 degrees below the normal. In 2026, Delhi has already seen two cold days, with the first recorded on January 6 and the second on January 7. As the city continues to grapple with cold wave conditions, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe.
