Delhi Police arrested a cook in connection with the deadly hotel fire that killed 21 people, with the accused claiming the blaze began after a spark in a fryer.

The cook, Keshav Negi, was arrested on Saturday and sent to two days in custody, despite his counsel claiming the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit elsewhere in the building.

Negi told investigators he was cooking in the kitchen when he saw a spark in a fryer, which subsequently caught fire, and fled the premises without helping anyone.

The cook's arrest comes after police arrested the owner of the hotel, Lovkesh Bajaj, who has been booked under charges including culpable homicide and mischief by fire or explosive substances.

Questions have been raised about whether the investigation is adequately focused on the systemic failures that allowed the hotel to operate in breach of fire safety and licensing norms.
