Delhi residents can expect a prolonged period of chilly weather, as cold northwesterly winds pick up speed from Friday. The mercury is expected to remain steady, with a maximum temperature ranging between 16-18°C, despite a shallow fog cover. The air quality has improved to the lower end of the 'very poor' range, with a 24-hour average air quality index of 311 recorded on Friday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Friday, warning of dense to very dense fog in parts of the city. A yellow alert is in place for moderate to dense fog on Saturday. Weather experts predict a sharp dip in the minimum temperature from January 4, with icy-cold winds expected to persist across the plains until January 15. According to weatherman Navdeep Dahiya, 'The consistent flow of cold northwesterly winds will lead to a significant drop in the minimum temperature, potentially below 5°C by the second week of January.' The Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi forecasts the air quality to remain in the 'very poor' category until January 11, with residents advised to take necessary precautions.
