A video circulating on social media has sparked controversy and demands for accountability after a Ghaziabad police officer was seen allegedly using a device to determine the nationality of residents in a slum cluster. The incident occurred during a routine "area domination exercise" on December 23, where police and Rapid Action Force personnel claimed to be detecting illegal immigrants. According to eyewitnesses, including 76-year-old Mohammad Saddique, the police officer used a smartphone to scan the back of a man and declared him to be from Bangladesh. However, Saddique and his family insisted they were from Araria in Bihar, producing documents on their mobile phone to prove it. The Ghaziabad police have confirmed the video was recorded during the exercise and have ordered an inquiry into the matter. DCP Nimish Patil stated that the exercise was part of routine security measures ahead of Christmas and New Year, but local residents have expressed concerns over the alleged intimidation tactics used by the police. An area domination exercise typically involves a visible police presence to deter crime and ensure public order. However, in this case, the police's actions have been criticized for potentially targeting innocent residents and causing unnecessary fear. The affected family has alleged that police officials tried to intimidate them by claiming they were Bangladeshi, and the incident has sparked demands for accountability within the Ghaziabad police force. The inquiry, which has been assigned to ACP of Indirapuram circle, is expected to investigate the matter further.
