The Andhra Pradesh government has dismissed police inspector Chinna Mallaiah from service after a rape case was registered against him.

Mallaiah is currently absconding and a manhunt is underway, police said.

He was dismissed from service by Guntur Range deputy inspector general (DIG) of police Sarvashrestha Tripathi, hours after the Supreme Court dismissed his petition seeking anticipatory bail.

The Vinukonda rural police registered a case against Mallaiah under section 64 (punishment for rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a complaint by the victim.

According to the complaint, Mallaiah barged into the victim's house and sexually assaulted her by threatening to kill her.

The victim had been staying alone as a tenant at the inspector's residence and medical examinations were conducted as part of the investigation.

Mallaiah had earlier worked in the Crime Investigation Department (CID) and was kept in vacancy reserve (VR) awaiting posting.
