New Delhi, As geopolitical tensions in West Asia threaten global fuel supply chains, Indian Railways has reached a milestone with 99.4% of its broad gauge network electrified as of January 2026, according to a note by Riding Sunbeams.

The electrification has led to a 178 crore litres reduction in diesel consumption in 2024-25, a 62% decrease since 2016-17.

India relies on the Strait of Hormuz for 40% of its crude oil imports and 20% of its LNG supply.

Indian Railways is at the forefront of rail electrification worldwide, far ahead of major rail economies, including China and the United Kingdom.

Riding Sunbeams noted that this achievement strengthens national energy resilience, reducing exposure to global supply route volatility.

By shifting to electricity, India has reduced its exposure to fossil fuel price shocks, lowering operating costs and maintaining affordable passenger fares.

Indian Railways remains a vital instrument of inclusive mobility and economic productivity, with over 26 million passengers travelling daily.
