The Indian Army is expected to induct the Zorawar light tank in 2028-29 after addressing development and trial issues, said Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.

The tank, developed by DRDO and Larsen & Toubro, will significantly boost the deployment speed and combat response of armoured regiments in the mountains.

Initially expected to be ready in 2027, the tank will strengthen the army's posture against Chinese forces along the contested Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The 25-tonne tank is a major stride towards indigenous capability and reflects the spirit of Atmanirbhar Bharat, the army chief said.

The tank will be designed as a light, agile and technologically advanced armoured platform tailored for India's terrain, especially high-altitude areas.

The requirement is for a protected, mobile, manned-unmanned teaming-enabled platform with substantial firepower, surveillance and communication capabilities.
