In a major trafficking bust, two Indian nationals were arrested in Indiana for allegedly smuggling over 300 pounds of cocaine inside a semi-truck. According to the US Department of Homeland Security, the incident occurred on January 5 during a routine truck inspection in Putnam County. The individuals, identified as 25-year-old Gurpreet Singh and 30-year-old Jasveer Singh, were arrested after authorities discovered 309 pounds of cocaine concealed in the sleeper berth of the semi-truck. The cocaine has a lethal dose of 1.2 grams, which is enough to kill over 113,000 Americans. Both Singh brothers were issued Commercial Drivers' Licenses by the state of California, sparking criticism from Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin. McLaughlin accused California Governor Gavin Newsom of having 'reckless' policies, which she claims are putting American lives at risk. Further investigation revealed that Gurpreet Singh had entered the US illegally in March 2023, near Lukeville, Arizona, and was released under the Biden administration. Jasveer Singh, on the other hand, entered the US on March 21, 2017, near Otay Mesa in California. This incident is the latest in a series of high-profile arrests of Indian nationals involved in illicit activities in the US. Earlier, a 22-year-old India-origin student was arrested on charges of arson and making a terroristic threat against family members.
