A perfect storm of flight cancellations and last-minute bookings has led to a staggering surge in airfares across India. IndiGo's massive cancellations have left thousands of passengers stranded, with many forced to pay exorbitant prices for alternative flights. Data from leading flight booking websites reveals a significant increase in airfares for same-day non-stop flights from Delhi to major metros and state capitals. For instance, a flight from Delhi to Bengaluru costs around ₹40,000, while a return flight from Bengaluru to Delhi can cost up to ₹70,000. The airfare for Delhi to Bengaluru drops significantly from December 7 onwards, with prices ranging from ₹37,571 to ₹7,173 by next weekend. Similarly, passengers traveling from Delhi to Mumbai on December 6 have to pay at least ₹36,107, while the maximum amount exceeds ₹56,000. The chaos has caused distress for thousands of passengers, who are now forced to shell out huge amounts of money for flights that would cost them a fraction of what is being charged now. In fact, international travel is currently cheaper than domestic flights in India, with a Delhi to Dubai flight available for as low as ₹15,000. The wave of cancellations has impacted thousands of passengers, with the worst affected airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. IndiGo has apologised to its customers and acknowledged the seriousness of the crisis, saying that operations will gradually ease starting Saturday as they work to reboot their operations. The crisis has highlighted the need for better communication and contingency planning from airlines to ensure that passengers are not left stranded due to cancellations. As the situation continues to unfold, passengers are advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates and to plan their travel accordingly.
