The Karnataka High Court has ordered the state government to provide a detailed response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by residents of Bengaluru's Waseem Layout and Fakir Colony, who claim their homes were demolished without notice on December 20. According to the petitioners, around 300 houses were destroyed in the demolition drive, leaving hundreds of families without shelter. The state government has argued that the demolition was necessary due to the adverse impact of the constructions on the local groundwater. However, the residents claim they have lived in the area for over 28 years. The court has directed the state to provide temporary rehabilitation to the affected residents and is providing food, water, and medical assistance. The matter will be heard again on January 22. The court's decision comes as a relief to the residents, who are still waiting for permanent solutions to their housing crisis. The state government will have to provide a detailed response to the PIL within a week, and the petitioners will have the opportunity to file a rejoinder to the state's response.
