A tragic incident in Hubbali district has sparked a heated debate over the need for stricter laws against hate crimes in Karnataka. A 19-year-old pregnant woman, Manya Vivekananda Doddamani, was brutally murdered by her father and relatives over her inter-caste marriage. The alleged killers attacked her on December 21, leaving her in critical condition. She succumbed to her injuries at Vivekananda Hospital in Hubbali. State social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa has announced that the government will examine the need for stricter legal measures against hate crimes in the upcoming assembly session. Mahadevappa described the incident as a 'murder linked to the denial of a woman's right to choose her partner.' He assured that the government will not spare those who suppress such rights and will take strict action against them. Home minister G Parameshwara, however, disagreed with the need for a separate law to deal with hate crimes. He claimed that the state's current legal framework is sufficient and that any shortcomings will be amended. Parameshwara also met with the Doddamani family and assured them that the guilty will be punished. The state government has promised to provide additional security to the family and has announced an inquiry into alleged lapses by the social welfare department. The investigation report will be used to initiate disciplinary action against those responsible for the lapses. The tragic incident has raised concerns over the need for stricter laws to protect women and their rights. As the debate continues, the focus remains on ensuring justice for the Doddamani family and preventing such incidents in the future.
