The Karnataka government is taking steps to tighten gun laws following a violent confrontation in Ballari district that resulted in the death of a Congress worker. The incident, which occurred on January 1, involved clashes between Congress and BJP supporters outside the residence of Gangavathi BJP MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy. Multiple sources reported that both police personnel and private gunmen opened fire during the confrontation, with a privately owned weapon possibly being used to kill the Congress worker, Rajashekhar Reddy. The deputy chief minister, D K Shivakumar, revealed plans to introduce new regulations on gun ownership after the confiscation of private firearms in Ballari. However, the opposition has accused the government of attempting to cover up the incident. Union minister HD Kumaraswamy claimed that the government was trying to shield those responsible for the killing and raised questions about the handling of the investigation. Kumaraswamy pointed out inconsistencies in the official narrative, including contradictory statements from senior leaders and a lack of disciplinary action against those involved. He also questioned the decision to conduct a second postmortem examination on the victim's body, citing concerns that the results may have been suppressed to implicate BJP MLA Gali Janardhana Reddy. The opposition's allegations have sparked a heated debate on the government's response to the incident and its commitment to transparency in the investigation.
