French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday, discussing the situation in West Asia and the need to restore safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The conversation came ahead of a virtual conference hosted by Britain and France on April 17, aimed at resolving the crisis in the crucial waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz was closed by Iran after military strikes by Israel and the US triggered the West Asia conflict on February 28.

Macron has urged the resumption of negotiations to clear up misunderstandings and avoid further escalation, and has called for the strait to be reopened unconditionally.

Several NATO member states, including Britain and France, have said they will not be drawn into the West Asia conflict by participating in Trump's blockade.
