Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to flag off India's first Vande Bharat sleeper train this month, connecting Guwahati and Howrah in a significant boost to the country's rail network. The semi-high-speed train is designed for overnight travel and will significantly reduce travel time between the two cities, saving passengers around two and a half to three hours. The train will have 16 coaches, accommodating 823 passengers, with 611 berths in 3AC, 188 in 2AC, and 24 in first class bogey. The fares have been designed to cater to the middle class, with 3rd-AC tickets priced at around ₹2,300, 2nd-AC tickets at ₹3,000, and 1st-AC tickets at ₹3,600. The Vande Bharat sleeper train will offer region-specific culinary options, with authentic Assamese cuisine for trains originating from Guwahati and traditional Bengali delicacies for those starting from Kolkata. The train's interior features ergonomically designed berths, automatic doors, enhanced ride comfort, and advanced safety systems. The launch of the Vande Bharat sleeper train marks a significant milestone in India's rail network, demonstrating the Indian Railways' focus on passenger-centric services, technological innovation, and regional connectivity. The train's production is being ramped up, with 12 trains expected to be ready by the end of this year. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the launch of the train, which will pass through several districts in Assam and West Bengal. He also revealed the timeline for the launch of India's first bullet train service, set to begin on August 15, 2027, with the first section opening from Surat to Bilimora. Vaishnaw emphasized that the fares for the bullet train will be competitive, with tickets available for booking in 2027. The minister also requested passengers to book their tickets in advance to ensure availability. The bullet train network is expected to be operational in sections, with the first section opening on August 15, 2027.
