Nitish Kumar, the chief minister of Bihar and Janata Dal-United supremo, has filed his nomination for the Rajya Sabha. This move will see him vacate the Bihar CM seat.
The elections for the five Rajya Sabha seats from Bihar are scheduled for March 16, necessitated by the ending terms of JD(U)'s Harivansh Narayan Singh and Ram Nath Thakur, RJD's Prem Chand Gupta and Amarendra Dhari Singh, and RLM's Upendra Kushwaha.
Nitish Kumar's decision to step down as CM comes months after leading the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to a landslide victory in the 2025 assembly elections. A BJP leader is expected to take over the top post, with Samrat Choudhary and Nityanand Rai being the probable contenders.
This move would make Bihar the first Hindi heartland state to have a BJP chief minister. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced nine candidates for the 2026 biennial elections to the Rajya Sabha across six states.
