President Droupadi Murmu has called on Indian craftsmen to focus on securing unique Geographical Indications (GI) tags for their products, which she believes will boost their credibility and global recognition. Speaking at the National Handicrafts Awards ceremony, Murmu highlighted the importance of GI tags in preserving India's rich cultural heritage and regional diversity. The GI tag is a certification that identifies products originating from a specific location, possessing unique qualities, reputation, or characteristics linked to that place. These products are recognized for their traditional craftsmanship and unique qualities. The handicrafts sector, which provides employment to over 3.2 million people in rural and remote areas, is a vital source of livelihood and inclusive development. The government has taken significant steps to support the sector, linking over 1.5 lakh handicraft units to the government e-Marketplace. The online platform, IndiaHandmade, has also helped artisans sell their products directly to buyers, providing them with financial freedom and social recognition. Murmu expressed confidence that the government's efforts will inspire young craftsmen to excel and contribute to India's goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. She emphasized the significance of art in connecting people to culture, each other, and their past, present, and future experiences.
