Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has criticized the Madhya Pradesh government for its handling of a water contamination crisis in Indore, which has claimed 10 lives. The water, contaminated with bacteria, has also affected over 1,400 people, causing widespread vomiting and diarrhoea. Gandhi alleged that the administration was 'asleep' while the people of Indore suffered, and instead of providing clean water, 'poison was distributed'. He also questioned the government's inaction despite repeated complaints about dirty and foul-smelling water. The Congress leader posed four key questions to the authorities: why no action was taken despite complaints, how sewage mixed with drinking water, why the water supply was not shut down in time, and when action would be taken against responsible officers and leaders. Gandhi also hit out at Madhya Pradesh minister Kailash Vijayvargiya for his remarks on the issue, calling them 'arrogant'. Vijayvargiya had sparked controversy by shutting down a reporter who posed questions about the contamination. The water contamination crisis in Indore has sparked a wider debate about governance in Madhya Pradesh. The state has faced several recent incidents, including deaths due to contaminated cough syrup and newborns dying after being bitten by rats. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also weighed in, questioning the 'cleanest city' tag awarded to Indore. He said the recent deaths due to contaminated water highlighted the need for stronger environment protection laws to prevent pollution, which is 'killing people'.
