A 17-year-old girl was brutally attacked in Madhya Pradesh's Shivpuri district after she allegedly rejected a marriage proposal from a 22-year-old stalker, police said.
The main suspect, Dharmendra Parihar, and his father, Ajab Singh Parihar, have been arrested in connection with the case, while three others remain absconding.
The girl was left with deep head and neck injuries and required 60 stitches, police said.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Dharmendra had been harassing the girl for a long time and pressuring her for marriage, but she refused.
Agitated by her refusal, Dharmendra attacked her with an axe and later tried to hang her with a scarf, police said.
A video of the incident was widely circulated on social media, prompting police to register an FIR against five people, including Dharmendra, under charges of attempt to murder, grievous hurt, and house trespassing.
