The Supreme Court has refused to extend Congress leader Pawan Khera's anticipatory bail in a case filed against him in Assam for levelling allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma.

Khera had sought an extension of his anticipatory bail until the Gauhati High Court hearing, but the Supreme Court bench of justices JK Maheshwari and AS Chandurkar refused, citing that Khera should have filed the application in the Gauhati High Court instead of the Supreme Court.

The court also noted that Khera had filed a 'forged and fabricated' Aadhaar card with his bail application, which was later replaced with the correct document.

The Assam Police opposed Khera's attempt to prolong his anticipatory bail, saying that he could have approached the district court in Assam instead of the Supreme Court.
