The Sahu family's joy over the birth of their six-month-old son Avyan, who had been eagerly awaited for a decade, was short-lived. The infant died last week after consuming milk prepared with Indore's contaminated municipal water, becoming the youngest victim of the city's water crisis. A total of 15 residents of Bhagirathpura have reportedly lost their lives due to a vomiting-diarrhoea outbreak caused by the contaminated drinking water, although the health department has confirmed only four deaths. The government has announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each to the families of the deceased. Avyan's grandmother, Krishna Sahu, expressed her grief and anger over the incident, saying that the family had not accepted any compensation from the state government. 'Our child is gone,' she said. 'Will the compensation bring him back to life?' The infant's death has left families in the area terrified, with many calling for the government to take immediate action to ensure safe drinking water. 'I have a month-old girl, a four-year-old and a 10-year-old in my house,' said neighbour Anita Sen. 'Now the government should ensure that no mother is robbed of her child due to contaminated water.' According to the health department, over 1,400 people have been affected by vomiting and diarrhoea in Bhagirathpura over the past nine days, with 272 patients admitted to hospitals and 71 discharged. At least 32 patients remain hospitalized, undergoing treatment in intensive care units.
