Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has slammed the government over its plans to redraw parliamentary constituencies, calling it a 'hasty' move that could lead to 'political demonetisation'.

Tharoor, who spoke in the Lok Sabha on Friday, said the government's proposal to increase the number of seats in the House by 50% was not a guarantee and could be easily discarded or altered by a simple parliamentary majority.

He also argued that increasing the number of seats would make the Lok Sabha the largest in any democracy in the world, making it unwieldy and unworkable.

Tharoor further pointed out that the government's promise of a flat 50% increase in seats was not codified in any law and could be easily changed.

He also spoke against the idea of increasing seats, saying it would create a body that would be difficult to work with, especially in an era where the government has been reducing the duration of parliament sittings.

Tharoor's comments come a day after he lashed out at the Modi government for linking women's reservation with delimitation, saying the Opposition will not allow 'political demonetisation'.
