Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee left Kolkata to attend a meeting of the INDIA bloc in Delhi, amid fears of a party split. Some loyalists believe that a section of the party's Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha members may break away following a coup by 58 legislators.
TMC Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Sekhar Roy compared the situation to a collapsed embankment, where everything is destroyed. He was joined by Lok Sabha MPs Kirti Azad and Saugata Roy, who expressed their loyalty to Didi.
However, TMC has 29 Lok Sabha members and 13 Rajya Sabha members, and some of them may meet the Lok Sabha Speaker and the Rajya Sabha Chairman on Monday and Tuesday. A senior TMC leader revealed that Mamata Banerjee is hoping to see INDIA bloc leaders on her side in this hour of crisis.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has made it clear that it will not induct any new members, and Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya stated that the Trinamool is breaking into pieces due to its lack of morals and principles.
The crisis deepened when West Bengal Assembly speaker Rathindra Nath Bose recognised 58 rebel TMC legislators as the principal opposition party in the 294-member House. TMC immediately expelled Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, the MLAs who led the coup.
