TMC MLA Firhad Hakim has resigned as Kolkata mayor, citing his inability to work. The move comes as the Mamata-led party faces a crisis following the recent assembly elections in Bengal.

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) was ousted from power after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a landslide victory with 208 seats.

The party is now facing a rebellion in its legislative ranks, with 58 rebel MLAs led by MLA Ritabrata Banerjee recognised as the principal opposition bloc.

Mamata Banerjee has been on a personal outreach mission, dialling several MLAs in an attempt to control the crisis.

The Ritabrata camp has seized control of the TMC's legislature party, and the row was triggered by allegations of forged signatures on a letter proposing a Leader of Opposition.
