A new team is expected to take charge at the US embassy in India next week, led by ambassador-designate Sergio Gor, a close aide to former US President Donald Trump. Gor, who was administered the oath of office in November, is set to arrive in India by January 10. He will be joined by Jason P Meeks, a seasoned diplomat who previously served as the deputy chief of mission in Nepal. The Trump administration's decision to impose tariffs on Indian goods and the stalled bilateral trade deal have strained relations between the two countries. However, Trump described Gor as a 'great friend' when nominating him for the post of ambassador to India last August. The 39-year-old businessman and political operative, who has been named as a special envoy to South and Central Asia, will aim to reset the bilateral relationship. Gor's visit to New Delhi last October, where he met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top officials, demonstrated his influence within the Trump administration. Meeks, with over 20 years of experience in Asia and Africa, will replace the outgoing US deputy chief of mission in New Delhi, Jorgan Andrews. Gor has expressed his intention to prioritize rebuilding the relationship with India, arranging a visit by Trump, and strengthening strategic partnerships. While Trump is scheduled to visit China in April, there are currently no plans for a visit to India in the coming months. The India-US bilateral trade agreement, which was expected to be concluded by the autumn of 2025, remains stalled due to issues in crucial sectors such as agriculture and dairy.
