Actor-politician Vijay's highly anticipated film Jana Nayagan has been delayed due to a censor certificate issue. The film's producers, KVN Productions LLP, announced the postponement on X, citing unavoidable circumstances beyond their control. The release was originally set for January 9. The delay stems from a petition filed by the producers against the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) at the Madras High Court. The court, led by Justice PT Asha, questioned the CBFC's decision to reopen the certification process after the Examining Committee had cleared the film, subject to minor cuts. The CBFC had initially requested 27 cuts and modifications, which the producers implemented and resubmitted on December 24, 2025. However, the Board withheld the certificate and referred the film to the Revising Committee on January 5. The producers claim this delay has caused significant financial loss, mental stress, and reputational harm. According to the court, the CBFC must operate as a statutory authority and cannot reopen a completed certification process based on a single complaint. The producers' senior counsel, Satish Parasaran, argued that the delay has caused irreparable harm, especially considering the ₹500 crore investment and planned release across 5,000 screens worldwide. The CBFC's additional solicitor general, A R L Sundaresan, defended the Board's decision, stating that the Chairperson has the authority to order a review under the Cinematograph Certification Rules. However, the court's questioning highlighted concerns about the CBFC's transparency and adherence to rules. The court has reserved its judgment, and the producers have announced that the new release date will be announced as soon as possible. The postponement has left fans eagerly awaiting an update on the film's release.
