Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has announced that the state government aims to complete and hand over 300 houses to families affected by the Wayanad landslide disaster by February. The houses are part of a larger township being built on the Elston Estate land near the Kalpetta bypass. This is the first phase of the rehabilitation project, which will also feature essential facilities such as an underground electricity network, drinking water supply, and waste management. The township, comprising 410 houses, is being constructed with a focus on safety, quality, and long-term sustainability. Each house will have a solar power plant and its own drinking water storage tank. The construction work is being carried out with strict quality control measures, with materials being tested on-site and verified by independent third-party agencies. The project follows the 'Build Back Better' principle, ensuring that every disaster-affected family gets a safer and better living space than before. This initiative is part of the state's commitment to treating housing as a basic right, with a total of 476,076 houses already completed and handed over through the LIFE Mission. The government plans to reach a milestone of five lakh houses by February, with 124,471 houses currently under construction.
