The women's quota bill in India has failed to pass in the Lok Sabha, despite receiving more votes in favour than against.
The bill, which aimed to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats to 850 and implement a 33% reservation for women, required a two-thirds majority to pass as a constitutional amendment.
However, it only received 298 votes in favour and 230 against, falling short of the 352 votes needed for a two-thirds majority.
The failure of the bill has been met with criticism from opposition parties, who have expressed their support for women's reservation but objected to the Delimitation Bill and the increase in Lok Sabha seats.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah slammed the opposition parties for their stance on the bills, saying that they will face the wrath of women in the next elections.
